Slight fragility at the bottom of the upper joint. Beautiful copy, interior very fresh. This is a singular work, at the crossroads of medicine, obstetrics, and theology. Written by Francesco Emanuele Cangiamila (1702-1763), a Sicilian ecclesiastic, author of the Embriologia sacra, initially published in Italian in the mid-18th century. The work quickly underwent translations and adaptations, as it addresses a question considered capital: how to ensure the spiritual salvation of the unborn child or the newborn in danger of death. We offer here the first of the three French editions. Cangiamila discusses pregnancy, difficult births, miscarriages, stillborn or premature children, cesarean sections, and abortion, with the central concern of safeguarding the life and baptism of the unborn child.
