We offer the first edition of this work, published in 1751. Other printings followed, notably in 1755. George MARTINE (Scotland 1700 - 1741) was a Scottish physician and physicist. The present work is devoted to thermometry and the experimental study of heat. This first edition gathers his research published after his death, and it would be widely taken up and circulated in the scientific compilations of the 18th century. Full calf binding, spine with 5 raised bands and 6 compartments tooled with flowers, including a red title label. 381 ff. Through a binder's error, two pages of the preface are missing. Good overall condition, corners very slightly rubbed and small abrasions of no consequence.
