Full calf leather binding, raised bands spine, compartments with fleurons, title and author label in gilt letters. Red edges. Trimmed headcap, restorations to the corners. Interior fairly fresh with some traces of dampstaining and scattered foxing without gravity. Pleasant copy. First edition, translated from English by the astronomer Antoine Darquier de Pellepoix, of the Elements of Plane Geometry published in London in 1747. Thomas Simpson (1710-1761) was a member of the Royal Society and professor of mathematics at Woolwich. An important English mathematician, his name remains attached to the famous numerical integration method known as "Simpson's rule". He proposes here a practical method for measuring and constructing figures, calculating angles, surfaces, and volumes, and demonstrating the rules used. He takes up the principles established since Antiquity by Euclid, but reorganizes them in order to make their understanding clearer and more progressive. Edition illustrated with geometric figures engraved in the text.
