This work is rare and is part of the political and polemical literature of the post-French Revolution. Lombard examines and describes various European secret societies, notably in Germany, such as the Bavarian Illuminati, the Tugendbund, and Freemasonry, to which he attributes significant influence on the political upheavals of his time. In a generally critical perspective, he seeks to show that these organizations operate in the shadows and contribute to the instability of European states. Lombard is known for his writings in favor of the Restoration and counter-revolutionary.
