DOCUMENTARY COLLECTION Instruction sur le soufrage des vignes Publication, reception, and institutional dissemination of a viticultural treatise under the Second Empire. LE CANU, L.-R. The collection is in octavo (8vo) format, in a half-morocco green binding with blue boards. Smooth spine, title and author in gilt letters. Scattered foxing, not serious. The brochure included in the collection: Duodecimo (12mo), 36 pp, printed paperback, good condition. Beautiful contemporary documentary set gathered around the publication of L.-R. Le Canu, including the First Edition of his instruction on the sulfur treatment of vines, press clippings relating to the work and its author, as well as a set of original manuscript correspondences received from administrations, agricultural societies, and learned societies solicited by the author. Published in 1861, in the context of the serious damage caused by oidium to French and European vineyards, the work of L.-R. Le Canu contributed to the dissemination of new viticultural practices based on the use of sulfur. The present set goes beyond the scope of a simple agricultural brochure: it preserves the material traces of its promotion, its institutional reception, and its influence, particularly in Spain. The author, in a manner characteristic of 19th-century scientific and agronomic publications, addressed his work to ministries, administrative authorities, learned societies, and agricultural organizations in order to promote its dissemination. The preserved manuscript responses testify to the interest shown in his work: encouragement, acknowledgments of receipt, requests for copies, and marks of support emanating from various institutions and personalities. L. R. Le Canu was a Doctor of Medicine, titular Professor at the School of Pharmacy of Paris, Member of the Imperial Academy of Medicine and the Health Council of the Seine department, Officer of the Legion of Honor, Knight of Charles III of Spain. Among these correspondences are, in particular, responses from the Ministry of Public Instruction and Worship, the Ministry of Agriculture, Commerce and Public Works, departmental agricultural societies, as well as national learned societies. The set is completed by a Spanish edition of the brochure, translated and dedicated to L.-R. Le Canu by his translator, testifying to the circulation of French viticultural knowledge and the interest shown in this treatment method. Rare documentary testimony on the dissemination of an agronomic innovation under the Second Empire, bringing together a printed work, its public reception, and the manuscript archives of its promotion.
