Sheet dimensions: 31.5 x 36.5 cm Plate mark dimensions: 22.8 x 34.8 cm Engraving attributed to Matthäus MERIAN extracted from the: "Topographia Sveviae" published in 1643 in Frankfurt am Main. Inscription "LA MOTTE" and a legend in German, from A to Q. This work is inspired by Abraham Bosse's work "THE SIEGE OF LA MOTTE" from 1634-35. It depicts the citadel of the town La-Mothe-en-Bassigny in present-day Haute-Marne, before it was destroyed in 1645. Good condition. Matthäus Merian the Elder (1593-1650), a German-Swiss copper engraver and publisher, published numerous maps, city views, and chronicles. His major work is the Topographia Germaniae, from which our engraving of La Motte originates.
