Gautier (Théophile, 1811‑1872). Le Capitaine Fracasse. Published in three volumes with a foreword by Judith Gautier; drawings by Charles Delort engraved by Mongin. Paris, Librairie des Bibliophiles (Jouaust), 1884, 3 vols. 8vo. Half morocco, spines with 5 decorated raised bands, with title and volume labels, top edges gilt. Volume I: VI + 270 pp.; Volume II: 294 pp.; Volume III: 270 pp. Frontispiece (portrait of the author) and etched plates after the drawings of Charles Delort, engraved by Mongin; initial letters and decorative headpieces. Some foxing on certain pages. But a good state of preservation, and the binding very well preserved. Unlike the initial edition of 1863/1866, this three-volume edition (1884) is a bibliophile edition, with carefully executed illustrations and a foreword by Judith Gautier, the author's daughter, situating the work in its literary and family context. A handsome, sought-after edition of this famous adventure novel.
