This work includes a large number of fictionalized biographies of tamers and taming women who have marked the history of the circus. In addition to these, Thétard has written a study on training and modern tamers accompanied by his personal memories of fairground life. Henry Thétard (1884-1968), journalist, tamer, and historian of the French circus, is known for having written about fifteen articles and four books on the subject of the circus. Our work, The Tamers, is the first published. 21 years later, in 1949, he founded with a group of enlightened amateurs the "Club du cirque" of which he assumed the presidency until his death in 1968.
