Les Idylles. THEOCRITE, Translation by André Berry and Edgar Vales. Illustrations by Paul Belmondo. Paris, Union Bibliophile de France, 1946. First Edition of this illustrated translation. Large quarto, loose sheets in publisher's covers, preserved in its original slipcase. Limited edition of 1,000 copies on Lana pure thread vellum, of which 970 are numbered (507). Illustrated with 47 black-and-white drawings by Paul Belmondo. Slipcase (rubbing in places), titled on the spine, and relief motif in a tondo. Interior fresh. Edition signed by André Berry. A reference text of Greek pastoral poetry, the Idylles celebrate nature, shepherds, love, and myths. The translation by André Berry elegantly restores the ancient text, brought to life by the classical illustrations of Paul Belmondo. The typographic composition by Maximilien Vox is of great modernity. This is a very beautiful post-war edition. A Greek poet of the 3rd century BCE, Theocritus is considered the founder of bucolic poetry. His work notably inspired Virgil and exerted a lasting influence on all Western pastoral literature.

Beautiful edition of this bucolic poetry text by the Greek poet Theocritus, which inspired Virgil. It is nicely illustrated by Paul Belmondo and the text is translated with the poetic distance of André Berry.
