Alexandre Magnus d'Obenheim (1753 Revel, 1840 Strasbourg). 12mo, 20.5 x 13 cm. Board sides and leather spine with false bands and title label. Lower corners slightly rubbed. Some inconsequential foxing in the volume. This memoir is the testimony of the life of a French officer of Saxon origin, from a Protestant, then Catholic, family, in the turbulent periods of alternating political regimes between the mid-18th and mid-19th centuries. It illustrates the difficulty of those times, between periods of good and very bad fortune. The author was an officer and a loyalist, took part in the fortifications of Cherbourg, was a student of the School of Military Engineering at Mézières, and later became a professor at Polytechnique, at the School of Engineering at Metz, then at the Artillery School of Strasbourg.
