This work by Renaudin is one of the first statistical studies of insanity in France. Renaudin draws on the registers of the Stephansfeld asylum (in the Bas-Rhin) to analyse the patients by age, sex, supposed causes, types of disorders and treatment outcomes. A precious local source for the medical and social history of Alsace: it gives a very concrete snapshot of the population confined in the Bas-Rhin at the beginning of the 19th century. Louis-François-Émile Renaudin (1808-1865) is among the first practitioners to have introduced a statistical and medico-administrative approach into the study and organisation of psychiatry in the 19th century. Attractive binding in red half-morocco, smooth spine, 54 ff. and 17 statistical tables at the end of the volume. Title page foxed, with a trace of dampstaining. The whole is in good condition and the interior is quite fresh.
