First edition published by Beatus Rhenanus of the works and treatises of Tertullien, theologian and Church Father, notably based on a manuscript from the Library of Payern, in the possession of the humanist from Sélestat. This edition is embellished with three large, richly illustrated borders, including the title page engraved by Ambrosius Holbein. Period full reversed leather binding, spine with 5 raised bands, manuscript title label on vellum. Abrasions and loss to the spine due to the fragility of the leather used. Tear, with loss, in the upper margin of the first leaf, minor worming, and marginal water stains. Fresh interior. The Works and Treatises of Tertullien bring together the writings of one of the first great Latin Christian thinkers, written in the 2nd and 3rd centuries. Tertullien defends Christianity against criticism from the Roman Empire and combats doctrines he considers heretical. He also develops reflections on morality, faith, the sacraments, marriage, penance, and the resurrection. This work profoundly influenced Western Christian thought by laying the foundations for many theological concepts. The 1521 Froben edition is valuable, as it constitutes the first complete printed edition of the works of Tertullien.
