On the Continental System and its Relations with Sweden. SCHLEGEL (August Wilhelm) Paris - Geneva, J.J Paschoud, 1814. Octavo (8vo), XI ff + 108 pp. Full speckled calf leather binding, spine with gilt fleurons, title piece. Very light rubbing to the corners. Small loss on the upper joint of the front board. Overall good condition, fresh interior. Manuscript note in pencil, then transcribed below in red ink. This work criticizes Napoleon's continental blockade, presented as a destructive economic system advantageous only to the French Empire. It argues for a Europe weakened by this policy and highlights Sweden's strategic position in the fight against Napoleon. The first edition of 1813 (Hamburg) corresponds to a combat text published during the war. The 1814 editions (Paris and Geneva) are reissues released at the fall of the Empire. They mainly serve to broaden the political reception of the text in the context of the Restoration. August Wilhelm von Schlegel (1767-1845) was a writer, literary critic, translator, and professor of philosophy at the Universities of Jena and then Bonn in Germany. Known for co-founding the journal Athenäum with his brother Friedrich von Schlegel (1772-1829), he published numerous works and was one of the main theorists of the Romantic movement.

A fine work opposing Napoleon's continental blockade policy. The author argues that this policy weakens Europe and uses Sweden as an example. Published at the time of the Empire's weakening. Beautiful binding and good condition.
