Accurante Corn. Schrevelio. First edition, first printing. Leiden, chez Francium Hackium, 1653. 8vo, full ivory vellum, smooth spine. 8 ff. including a frontispiece. 888 pp (with a jump in pagination from 837 to 888 due to a publisher's pagination error, but the text is quite complete and continuous), 22 ff (including table and index). A copy in excellent condition, without stains or tears, without holes or oxidation. This work is at once of literary, philological and bibliophilic interest. It is an important 17th-century humanist edition of the works of Horace, the Latin poet of the 1st century BC, famous for his Odes, Satires and Epistles and for his major influence on European literature. This so-called "variorum" edition brings together the Latin text accompanied by scholarly commentaries, scholia and indexes intended for in-depth study. It was supervised by Cornelius Schrevelius, a Dutch humanist and philologist renowned for his school and critical editions of the classical authors. The commentaries of Johannes Bond (John Bond), an English scholar of the 17th century, enrich the work with a grammatical, historical and interpretative reading of the text.
