Heavy Frigate Raoul Serres (1881 - 1971) Etching and aquatint in colours. Ca 1960. Leaf dimensions: 66 x 50 cm Platemark size: 51.6 x 39.9 cm Very good condition, without foxing, fine margins. Signature of the artist in the lower margin. The work presents a heavy frigate in the style of the warships of the reign of Louis XIV, with an imposing stern castle richly decorated with the arms of France. She sails under canvas while a longboat pulls away from her. A subject treated with fine expressiveness. Raoul Serres, trained at the Beaux-Arts, won the Grand Prix de Rome and is recognised for the delicacy and precision of his line in literary illustration. He is an important figure of 20th-century printmaking.
