Objects of Mosaic Worship in Jewish Tradition: Altars, Purification Basin, and Tables of the Law Schedel, 1493, Woodcut, period coloring. Folio (39.9 x 27.7 cm) Incunabulum leaf from the Nuremberg Chronicle (1493), illustrating the 'third era of the world'. On the recto, it depicts the objects of Mosaic worship: altars of burnt offerings, purification basin, garments of the high priest. The Latin legends describe the forms, uses, and variations 'according to the Hebrews' and 'according to the Latins'. The woodcuts, enhanced with period colors, are from the workshop of Wolgemut and Pleydenwurff. This plate serves as a visual synthesis of the liturgy prescribed in Exodus and Leviticus. On the verso: Illustration of the Tables of the Law and the plaques of the Tabernacle with their gilded fittings. The engravings detail the dimensions and assemblies of the sacred elements according to Mosaic prescriptions. The whole forms a technical and symbolic plate on the fabrication of the sanctuary objects. Very good condition.
