Portrait of Elizabeth I of England

Remigius Hogenberg Elizabeth of England, France and Ireland by the grace of God. Circa 1575. Copper engraving. Platemark size: 30.5 x 19.7 cm Leaf size: 36.3 x 27 cm Chess-queen watermark. Signature in the plate: "Remigius Hogenbergius fecit". Slight losses in the lower left and upper margins. Some oxidation and soiling in the margins. A large portrait by Remigius Hogenberg (Mechelen 1535, England 1588), brother of Franz Hogenberg. An impression of this print is held in the British Museum. A Flemish engraver, who took refuge in England around 1570. Several portraits by Hogenberg are known, but often of small format. Bibliography: Michael Fleming, PQ XXXI 2014 p.177
