Turtle - Fire painting
Swimming turtle. Asai OSUI (1808-?) Original fire drawing (Yaki-e) on Japanese paper, second half of the 19th century. Signed and bearing the artist's red seal. Work executed with a heated iron, offering delicate shades of brown and sepia. Osui is documented as a practitioner of Yaki-e. This is not a print, but a drawing, in a technique that is known but rare and difficult to execute. The close-up photos clearly show the relief carved by the tool into the thickness of the sheet. The astonishing rendering is that of a brush and wash drawing. Sheet dimensions: 39.6 x 53.3 cm. A water stain in the lower margin, minor and not affecting the drawing.
