A COURT IN DAMASCUS PROWNE (Henriette) and COURTRY (Charles) Etching, late 19th Century. Sheet dimensions: 36 x 27 cm Plate mark dimensions: 23 x 19 cm Engraving depicting the interior of the court in Damascus, Syria. This is an Orientalist work from the late 19th century, engraved by Charles Courtry after the eponymous work by Henriette Browne at the Salon of 1896. Very good condition, wide margins. Charles Courtry (1846-1897) was a French engraver and illustrator. The Bénézit Dictionary describes him as "one of the best etchers of the 19th century." A specialist in etching, he contributed to various journals, such as the Gazette des beaux-arts, L'Artiste, the Musée universel (1873-1878), and Paris à l'eau-forte.
Very beautiful Orientalist print. A magnificent work on chiaroscuro. Very wide margins and inking.
