Azuni is one of the forerunners of modern maritime law. He played an important role in the drafting and codification of European maritime trade rules at the end of the 18th century. During the Napoleonic period he was appointed to important administrative posts under French authority in Sardinia, where he was born. The treatise systematically sets out the principles of maritime law applied in Europe at the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century, addressing in particular neutrality, the rights of neutrals and belligerents, prizes at sea, the jurisdiction of maritime courts and the rules of maritime trade.
