Les Constitutions des campagnes de l'Alsace au Moyen-Âge. Paris, Strasbourg, Durand, Salomon, 1864 ; Octavo (8vo) of 389 pp. Half-calf glazed, raised bands spine, author, title and initials in gilt at the tail, gilt fillets and blind-stamped fleurons. Some rubbing on the boards. The word "constitutions" does not refer here to a modern political constitution, but to regulations, customs, charters, village statutes, and seigneurial rights establishing the obligations of peasants and the organization of communities. This important collection of sources on the rural institutions of medieval Alsace brings together the main texts relating to the organization of the Alsatian countryside between the 9th and 15th centuries. It notably contains the famous Constitution of Oderen, the rolls of Ingenheim, Geispolsheim, Bærsch, Kogenheim, and Sermersheim, as well as the customs of Marmoutier, fundamental documents for the study of land tenures, village communities, usage rights, and rural jurisdictions. This work remains one of the essential sources for the history of institutions, customary law, and rural society in medieval Alsace.
