Letter regarding the state of the vineyards in Wolxheim in August 1866. From Mr. SIMON, to Mr. Charle BOERSCH, editor-in-chief of the Courrier du Bas-Rhin. Strasbourg, August 24, 1866. In this letter, Mr. Simon addresses Mr. Boersch, providing testimony on the state of the vineyards in Wolxheim. The weather suggests a poor harvest and wine of mediocre quality, difficult to sell against competition from wines from the south. Sheet dimensions: 21.8 x 17.5 cm. Very good condition. The Courrier du Bas-Rhin was initially called "Niederrheinischer Kurier" and was first published in 1803. It followed the "Strasburger Weltbote". From 1810, it adopted the French title "Courrier de Strasbourg" and became bilingual. In 1823, it became the "Courrier du Bas-Rhin" and belonged to the Silbermann family until 1872. This liberal-leaning newspaper had the largest circulation of the Alsatian press in the 19th century. In September 1874, the title merged with the "l'Elsässer Journal" to become the "Journal d'Alsace-Lorraine". Charles Boersch (Strasbourg 1811 - Nancy 1871) was a French journalist and politician. Editor-in-chief of the Courrier du Bas-Rhin, a republican newspaper, he was a municipal councilor of Strasbourg. He was elected representative of the Bas-Rhin on February 8, 1871, and resigned on March 1 to protest against the annexation of Alsace-Moselle.
