Plan of Luxembourg From the Description des Pays-Bas of Lodovico Guicciardini Copper engraving, 1613. Leaf size: 29.3 x 35.7 cm. Platemark size: 23.5 x 31.7 cm. Early or contemporary colouring. Gilt coats of arms. Central fold, from the volume from which the plate is taken. Restoration of a tear in the upper margin, which does not affect the overall appearance. Fine margins. Plan of the city and fortress of Luxembourg. Plate no. 93 of the illustrated edition of the Description des Pays-Bas of Lodovico Guicciardini, published at Amsterdam in 1613 and 1625 by Johannes Janssonius. The engravings of this edition were executed by several artists working for the map-making workshops of Amsterdam, among them Pieter van den Keere (Petrus Kaerius) and Johannes van Doetecum, though the present plate cannot be attributed with certainty to either of them This plate, inspired by the surveys of Jacob van Deventer, is very close to the famous representation by Braun & Hogenberg published in the Civitates Orbis Terrarum (1581).
